Mario made out of Rubik’s Cubes
February 25th, 2007
This is from 2005, but it’s still genius. French artist Space Invader (an alias, his parents weren’t that l33t) specialises in creating artworks out of Rubik’s Cubes. Like this version of Mario, which can be found on his Rubikubism site. Others include rubikart based on 9/11 and A Clockwork Orange.
Space Invader also spends a fair amount of time travelling the globe sticking rogue Space Invaders on walls. Marvellous. His website has all the details.

Combining Star Trek-like cool factor with the simple practicality of a drug-free way to make dubious water safe to drink, the SteriPEN Classic UV Light Water Purifier destroys viruses, bacteria and cysts with a swizzle of the stick. Since it doesn’t use chemicals it’s safer for the environment - it doesn’t create resistant strains - and it’ll make you feel better without your needing more water bottles. $100 USD. [GT]

Saab 9-3 BioPower Hybrid concept car
February 25th, 2007
The Saab 9-3 BioPower Hybrid concept car has a 2.3t engine which delivers 14% more power and 11% more torque when running on E85 bioethanol compared to petrol, which means you can really gun it down the M5 but still feel virtuous about burning cleaner fuel (though if you have to use petrol, it can take it). Based on typical petrol consumption, driving a BioPower would reduce your consumption by 1,087 litres per year. However, it’s also a convertible, with air conditioning and iPod hookups and climate control and all kinds of things making it a sexy ride as well as a responsible one. [GT]

Time Table proves time is always in style
February 25th, 2007

Resembling a gigantic LED alarm clock grafted onto an undergrad-era coffee table, the Time Table is nonetheless sneakily cool. The digits are glowing electroluminescent film that comes in at only 6cm thick. Unsurprisingly, it does include an alarm feature (but probably not a snooze button). [GT]

Egyptian blogger gets four years’ prison for ‘insult’
February 25th, 2007

Abdel Kareem Soliman, aka Kareen Amer, has been sentenced to four years’ prison for insulting various things bloggers are prone to insult. (Bite me, Tony Blair!) Soliman had some choice words about Islam, the president of Egypt, and called his alma mater al-Azhar “the university of terrorism”. He was expelled last year and his school pushed for him to be arrested for being mouthy. Visit Free Kareem to get in on doing something to support his human right to speak his mind and be free. [GT]

Bubblegum colour co-ordinated FM transmitter for iPod nano
February 25th, 2007
FM transmitters are now legal - and indeed cheaper and less bulky. And the best example of the latter two points can be found on the Bubblegum FM transmitter.
It’s designed for the second generation nano, adding just 3cm to the size of your player. And even better - it’s available in a range of colours that can match your choice of nano shade. And if you have a different dock-connecting iPod, you can still use it - it just doesn’t look as sleek.
Frequency range is a healthy 87.9FM right up to 107.9, with nine presets that should help you avoid disruption. It’s available now, retailing for £9.95.
